    Crystallized Zalra: Silent Grotto

    Quest: Prism Shard Mining

    4000 / 4000
Looks like there may be some color in the Crystallized Zalra after all. Deep within the region where only a small handful of adventurers have ever reached due to the danger level of the crystal beings that reside there, there lies several of these rare shards all encased under a smooth crystal skin. This has not prevented their rainbow shades from being seen through the crystal though! Even better is that some have been seen sticking out of the surface of objects, requiring no need to shatter the crystal. This is good because the crystal in this region is extremely difficult to shatter!

If you have come here to 'mine' for shards bare in mind it's dangerous and the area has no food or water readily available this far out from civilization. You are truly isolated from normal living creatures in this place.

Mining these shards will put you at risk of crystallization where the crystal will stick to your skin and begin to grow until it consumes you. You can treat this disease by not staying for an extended amount of time and see a crystal healer in a village or outpost. Other threats may also include crystallized beasts, bandits, and overly competitive players.

Alpha grinned as she struck gold (or, well, prism shard) despite her nasty injuries from the treacherous terrain. She had done a good job so far in keeping away from bandits and the like. She had a solid plan: get in, get some crystals, and rush out before that weird crystallization thing could get to her. She had already seen some miners neck-deep in hard, shiny rock and she wasn't eager to end up like those guys.

Her hand cupped the prized shard and she gently placed it in her satchel. Her hand stung from exertion but she didn't give it much thought. Maybe she'd harvest one or two crystals more before she returned to one of the nearby outposts for some treatment and rest.

Shrugging, she put that thought away for now and went back to digging at the plentiful ground beneath her. It's only a matter of time before she'd find another one, she hoped.

Surrechis winced as a sharp chunk of crystal sliced her leg. She was trying to be careful but the terrain was incredibly dangerous and hard to navigate. Spotting a flat looking crystal, she leaned against it carefully and got some bandages out of her traveling bag. She wrapped the wound with her bandage and decided to continue on. There was no point in standing around if it was only going to get her turned into a rock. She'd heard stories about curious statues dotting the region, within them being the bodies of those that had succumbed to the infection. Steadying herself, she resolved to continue searching. It would be a shame if she traveled all the way out here but didn't find anything. Then again, it would be an even bigger shame to die in this harsh, desolate forest. Still, she felt fine enough to continue searching.

A bit foolish, wasn’t it? Unarmed as he was, Cain still found himself there within the depths of Crystallized Zalra, pickaxe in hand, enjoying the full extent of what it meant to be a slave in real life. Terrible working conditions that actively conspired to kill you, if the environment itself didn’t kill him first? Yeah, he didn’t have any pretense that he was going to last long down below. Within this beautiful yet deadly place, strength of body didn’t matter. All around, others were succumbing, crystalline infections bursting of their skin. For some, it may have been the stuff of nightmares, but for Cain?

Damn, this was so cool! Ignoring the infection that had already created shiny ‘scales’ over his forearms, the muse continued to single-mindedly bash away at rainbow stone. Most of it was ‘garbage’, powdered dust that had no intrinsic value other than to be breathed in and get a variety of lung diseases from, but he had seen others strike it rich before, an entire gem falling into place.

“Hey ho, hey ho, hey ho!”

Between grunts of exertion and short breaks to wipe the sweat from his brows, Cain Darlite, too focused for a song, created a simple rhythm instead to modulate his work. His head began to bob. The fatigue in his virtual body began to dull. The pain that continue to sap away his strength began to fade.

Oh, he was in the zone.

And what was that but a glimmer of crystal within that pile of garbage? With a smooth, graceful motion, the muse swept it up into his pockets and continued to mine away, a grin . Four more to go. That was his personal challenge. He was going to get at least five of these things! He was going to be the Mining King!

Kyupin had heard of the mines deep in Crystallized Zalra, and the mission to gather some shards down there. With her grown companion, Vulcan, by her side, she'd decided to check out the cave. The rainbow light sparkling from the crystals had blinded her, fascinating the small Felis. It had been a long, dangerous journey down to the cave, but it seemed to be, for the most part, worth it? Kyupin walked past the crystallized miners, their faces frozen in terror. She couldn't help them. She was too late.

Maybe she could help out and keep the miners safe, escort the weaker ones back to the nearby posts? And if she found a shard or two to take home with her... Well, it couldn't be too bad, right?

Kyupin ducked under a low-hanging crystal, hand pressing against it. Apparently the pressure had been enough to break off a small shard. She blinked, looking at the shiny rainbow-filled piece in her hand. Already, the crystal seemed eager to latch to her skin and try to spread. Even tucking the crystal into a pouch at her hip did nothing to stop the growth. She sucked in air between her teeth. "Careful, Vulcan. Don't touch anything, okay?" she said, giving him a pointed look.

This wasn't a place that Amane liked venturing into to explore, but she had heard from word of mouth that the mysterious prism shards could be found here, and in much more plentiful supply than the last time she had tried her skill against one of those rabbits...to complete and utter failure. This time though, the felis was determined to walk away with at least one of them, and so she found herself hunkered down amidst the colourful crystals, digging with rudimentary tools in an attempt to wedge some of the expose shards out.

"Ouch!" she gasped, jerking her hand back with a winced as a sharp pain coursed through her limb. Glancing at her arm, tiny crystal could be seen on the skin's surface, and were they growing on it? She brought her arm closer to her eyes to peer in part astonishment, part horror, the sight of the crystals breeding like parasites on her own her own body was just...grotesque, to say the least. Amane wasn't a squeamish person, she liked to think, but this was taking the game's level of gore a bit too far.

Biting through the pain that emanated unceasingly from her right arm, she swapped over to the left. Though those crystal growths seem to have taken a large part of her health, she wasn't in critical danger yet — there was no need to give up for now.

Eldhi was back again at the crystallized land of Zalra but this time, she was actually looking for gems instead of fighting against a crystal Gryphon, a golden tablet, or strange mechanical contraption monster thingy. Nope, time to properly have what Zalra has to offer, the (in)famous shiny Prism Shards!

Just underneath the layer of common crystal, Eldhi could see the prismatic glow of the rare coveted crystals. Oho~ one of those would be hers, yes. She had read up on the topic regarding mining... a bit, a few pages maybe, but ah~ what could possibly go wrong? She had a pickaxe with her, everyone knew that carrying pickaxes automatically made you an expert minor. Placing one hooked end of her tool, the Paladin prepared her first dig. One, two, three, and here goes nothing!

    **CLANG!**

    ...

    **BOOM!!!**

"Ah..." Before she knew what was happening, Eldhi was flying through the air, her armored form crashing against a bed of crystals a few feet away. "..." W-what just...happened? did the crystal explode? She was sure she didn't spot any bombs around... Coughing violently, pain all over form and utterly confused, Eldhi painstakingly stood back up, already using her light to heal her own wounds, but by Tyl, the cramped nature of the place made it hard to breathe. Maybe she could try one more...?

Ursula growled at the weird sensation in her right. It was enough frustration to have failed on her first attempt at getting something worthy of the pain she felt, but to top it off she had to deal with bandits, monsters and a nasty kind of curse that seemed to mess around with her body. The blacksmith rested her pickaxe on her shoulders while taking a quick break to regain her breath. On the ground around her, many corpses littered the crystallized dirt of the crystal “forest”. “For the love of Endra… I feel like crystallized poop. If it ain’t enough that minin’ these crystals is hard, I have to deal with a nasty curse thing as well. I tell ya this has somethin’ to do with magic, I’m sure of it! Everythin' works with magic!”

Huffing in annoyance, Ursula raised her pickaxe once more. Waiting for too long would force her body to succumb to the curse much like some of the corpses around her ended up. A shriek came from behind a large crystal; a bandit from the same group she dispatched a few minutes ago was surprised to see his buddies on the ground, crystallized. Ursula’s generally calm and laid-back expression quickly turned into a cold gaze.

“Why hello there, little cheater…” She extended her right arm in the general direction of the now fleeing bandit. Her mechanical gauntlet was launched like a rocket, grabbing him by the ankle while reeling the bandit in at great speeds. Once her arm managed to retrieve one of her goddess’ nemesis, Ursula kicked the man’s throat, pinning him down on the crystallized ground. A quick glance found no prism shard.

“Bummer. Seems like ya ain't lucky either eh, pal?" Although she felt nothing but contempt toward his bandit kind, her eyes catched just how much the curse was eating away at his body. To his luck (or despair) Ursula wasn’t a sadist. “Worry not buddy, I’ll make it quick.” Her pickaxe raised high in the air, the tinker gears ran at full speed as they mixed the eridium, cobalt and orichalcum powder. It released a powerful kinetic blast on contact with the body, killing the man instantly. “May Endra guide your soul to the path of honesty.” Before long, the crystals engulfed the mangled body.

Ursula rested her weapon on her shoulders once again, checking her surroundings. “Well then, next…”

Crystallized Zalra wasn't exactly Roland's favorite zone. Most of the creatures in the area were unsurprisingly crystallized and likewise resistant to physical attacks. As of this time, Roland had yet to find a potion to help bypass this and was forced to waste a lot of energy cracking through their thick exoskeletons. Despite this, he had heard rumors of a hidden area now unlocked that allowed players to farm the precious prism shard material. Up until this point, he had only seen the shards in passing; he had never been able to get one for himself. Driven by pure curiosity, he headed inwards into the grotto and began to mine in some of the lesser traveled areas hoping to strike pay dirt.

Temperance was not overly fond of the Crystallized Zalra area. Not after the... creepy mechanical-man-thing had attacked her last time. But rumors had spread that they had fled, and hey that rhymed!

She was already in a more cheerful mood, wow! Moving through the gem-saturated area, she saw many people dig dig digging away at the ground in an attempt to acquire all those beautiful gems! Wooh! What did they do? Where did they come from? Did they make good ear rings? These and many more important questions were considered as she lifted up a spare pick axe to try and knock out a few crystals of her own. Unfortunately she slipped on her ass, fell over backwards, and a rather long and sharp branch of a cluster stabbed her in the lower back. She whimpered and pulled herself off of it, using some of her magic to close the wound up, but already knew it would take more than a few spells to make that right.

Alpha grinned as she scored another jackpot, throwing her arms up in the air with a celebratory laugh. "Woohoo! Alphabet Chocolate does it again!" she proclaimed, wrapping her grubby hands around her prize and eagerly taking it out of its earthen socket. Now there were two more prisms that had reached her hands today and boy did she feel great. That'd bring her shard total up to five if she remembered correctly. Her collection was growing bigger!

She stood up, wiping the sweat that began to pool from her head and fanned herself with her shirt. So now the decision of whether to continue or not loitered around the corners of her mind and she pondered, thought, and debated...and thought...and thought...and thought...

Returning to Zalra was perhaps not the smartest move. But it looked like those odd crystal pyramids had vanished, and this area seemed rather devoid of any beasts. So it did seem safe enough, Ash supposed.

And there were prism shards here! Just, lying out there in the open! That was a surprise, pleasant as though it was. She still had no idea what they were for, but she attempted to pry one out anyway. First with her hands--ow, ow, who knew that the crystal was kind of like sharp glass, ow!--which obviously didn't work.

As she took a step back to examine the shards again, she felt an odd tingling in tips of her fingers. Glancing down at them with a frown, she noted that they were feeling a little stiff. Odd. She tried wiggling them, which kind of worked. Still felt stiff. What was that about?

It skittered and skittered and skittered, the mandibles of the crystalline centipede opening and closing, one hundred quartz-infused legs click-clattering against the stone floor. Searching. Hunting. Scarcely three feet away, Cain remained motionless behind the collection of crystals that he had been bashing away at moments ago, hugging the pickaxe against his chest. The tool jabbed into his ribs, but he neither moved nor breathed. His heart slowed even as his mind screamed, hoping that the monster would leave without picking a fight.

Seconds encroached the minute mark, and he was running out of air. As if sensing his own weakness, the crystalline infection accelerated more, pushing out of his face, sealing one eye shut. But even then, even as parts of his body petrified under the strange curse that lingered within Crystallized Zalra, Cain didn’t move. Didn’t move and continued to smile.

After what felt like years, the centipede crawled away, and the tall man sucked in breath after breath, relieved beyond imagination. Wiping his brow, he stood up once more, stretching out his back before rolling his shoulders. Alright, break time was over. Feeling the weight of another scintillating shard within his pocket, obtained from a collection of crystals dangerously close to that centipede’s nest, Cain nodded to himself. Yes, that was definitely worth the risk.

Rolling up his sleeves, he hefted the pickaxe up and continued once more to strike diamond dust upon the hill of swords.

Trying to loosen the shards out of the surrounding crystal using little vines didn't work either. Ash was at a loss as to what to do. She couldn't even cast the spell she was trying anymore, and it wasn't for lack of energy this time. The stiffness to her fingers had gotten steadily worse over time, until she could barely curl her fingers to try and trace the incantation into the air.

Which- that wasn't normal, was it? Ash looked back down to her hands and almost yelped at what she saw. Starting from the tips of her fingers, her skin was turning blue, the same hue as the crystals around her. Her nails glittered oddly, unlike how keratin normally reflected light. Her hands were... turning into crystal?

Oh, this was bad! She needed to go, now! Without another glance back towards the crystals and the mysterious prism shards contained within, Ash spun around and quickly began making her way out of Zalra. She needed to find someone who knew something about the crystalization that had affected the region.
